"Au Pair Gathering" in New York City
Hi
everyone!
My
name is Niha. I would love to share my au pair experience in the U.S. I have
many great memories and stories of my year. In April 2013, I travelled from
Indonesia to the U.S. That was my very first time going abroad. I felt a little
bit nervous about traveling on my own and living far from home. I was sad to
leave my country, my family, and my friends, but, on the other hand, I was very
happy to have this opportunity. I didn’t even have a dream to come to the U.S.
One day, I received an email from a host family in America, who told me that
they needed an au pair. Well, finally, I came to the U.S. The adventure began.
I
arrived in Florida and met the CEO of Expert Au Pair, the staff, the trainers,
and three other girls. The three girls were from China, the Philippines, and
Vietnam. I was so happy to meet them. We had a great time there during au pair
training. After training, we were ready to join our host family. We would be
living in different cities. Two girls would live in Chicago, one in New Jersey,
and I would live in Baltimore. I experienced an unforgettable story, which was
so silly. But it really happened to me! I was supposed to take a plane to
Baltimore, but I took the wrong plane that was going to Louisville. I went to
the wrong gate! I didn’t even know how it could have happened. It was just so
silly!
Well,
in the beginning everything was difficult. I didn’t speak English very well; I
didn’t have many friends, and it made me feel homesick. In my first four months
in the U.S., I was not happy, but I had to be responsible for my decision to be
an au pair. It was not easy living together with the family in a different
culture. We had to really understand and respect each other. But, my host
family and I always discussed problems together. The family respected my
schedule. If there was something that I should improve in taking care of the
kids, they told me. So, I really knew what I had to do with the kids. I was
thankful for my host family’s guidance.During my stay, I loved doing crafts,
playing, doing learning time, painting, and many other interesting activities
with the kids. I became close to the kids, getting to know what they needed,
and learned to handle them in many conditions. I travelled with my host family
a few times: to Chicago, Florida, and Philadelphia. We had a good relationship
even though we had a few little problems sometimes. But we always tried to
solve the problems together. Even now, we still keep in touch, and I can see
the kids grow up. They are getting big now.
In
my free time, I used to go out (shopping, sightseeing, library, or go to the
bookstore), or just go for a walk to the harbor, and meet some friends. I love
to meet new people and and talk to them.
In
the family, I also learned how to make some American dishes. In the beginning,
I didn’t like cheesy food, which is very common in the U.S. But by the time I
was getting ready to return home to Indonesia, I was getting used to the
American food. Now I love it! American food and Indonesian food are really
different, so I learned a lot.
I
really loved school. I took English and French courses at the community
college. I enjoyed the experience so much, and I had nice friends in the class
from many different countries. It was the best time to talk about our cultures,
foods, education, and many other things. Not only that, but I also had two
wonderful English teachers (one German and one American). I often told them
that my English is not good. But they always encouraged me, and I kept trying
to improve my English. I also had dinner with my German teacher and her family
a few times. We went to a performance of classical music as well, which we
enjoyed. We always discussed interesting
things. They loved to ask about my country, my family, my school, and
Indonesian food. When I moved to the suburb, the problem began. The school was
now far from the house. I had to take two different buses and a train to get
there. It was a little bit complicated and scary because I would be very late
arriving home. My class was in the evening and finished at 9:30 PM. After that
I had to catch a bus, a train, and one more bus to get home. But since my
American teacher knew that, she always picked me up and took me back home. I
cannot describe how thankful I am to these two wonderful teachers. Before I
left the U.S we had a farewell party. My
teachers gave me gifts, and we ate together in the class with the other
students. They each wrote me something in a card, and I was moved to tears.
What an impressive moment!
Well,
here is my little story. My au pair experience totally changed my life. I am
more independent, know how to handle the kids in many conditions, and, of
course, learned about a new culture. Also, I have really improved my English
language skills. I had opportunities to see some states and made friends from
all around the world. I could open my mind and my heart to have a new
perspective of the world. Thank you so much for Expert Au Pair, my host family,
my teachers, and my friends for being a part of my journey in the U.S.
